What is Somatics?

SOMATICS is a safe, slow and mindful movement practice which helps to reduce pain in restricted areas of the body. It is a way of teaching your muscles to relax with long lasting effect. With specific movements, you align and recalibrate muscles which may have been held in unhealthy postures for years.

In Somatics, you use your mind to alter your body, physically rewiring your neural circuits to reach muscles which have either become lazy or too tight.

Somatics in Tonbridge

The word Soma is the ancient Greek word for body. The philosopher and movement teacher Thomas Hanna used the term ‘Somatics’ to refer to the discipline of movement re-education which seeks to cultivate an internal awareness of one’s body.

His studies in neurophysiology taught him about brain reflexes and the role the brain plays in creating muscular patterns of contraction. To experience something somatically is to experience it in your body.

Somatics Classes

My classes introduce you to the concept of interoception, the term for awareness of the internal state of the body. Developing the tuning in to what is happening on the inside informs us how we need to modify our mindset to maintain good health and balance in our bodies.

You are guided to explore internal awareness of your body by sensing, feeling, noticing, registering and letting go. The resulting effects of greater awareness of the body and a reduction in pain, are fast and long lasting.

Classes last 75 minutes and are either on a one-to-one basis, or in small groups with a maximum of 5 participants.
